Since the launch of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 1992, Singapore has been pursuing economic linkages with various countries through free trade agreements (FTAs). In 2003, amidst much fanfare and controversy, Singapore signed a much-anticipated FTA with the United States. Yet, few studies have been done on the impact Singapore FTAs have on the various business sectors in Singapore. This book seeks to make business sense of Singapores FTAs. It cuts through the legalese of the Agreements and draws out the elements relevant to businesses in areas such as trade in goods, trade remedies, customs administration, trade in services, investment, intellectual property, government procurement, labour and environment, and dispute settlement. Finally, the book considers the trade-offs that Singapore has made under the FTAs and points out the possible implications and opportunities for businesses.

About the Author
Wong Chian Voen is a manager at WCI Consulting Pte Ltd Singapore. Ms Wong is very familiar with free trade agreements (FTAs) and is a technical expert on rules of origin and customs matters. She assists clients on issues relating to application of FTAs to their business operations and strategies, as well as on other trade-related matters. Formerly an Assistant Director at the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry and an Assistant Manager at the International Enterprise Singapore, Ms Wong was heavily involved in Singapores FTA negotiations, in the areas of rules of origin and customs cooperation, with New Zealand, Japan, the United States and Mexico.
